What’s in your Nature
A monk and one of his students were taking a walk through a forest. They came upon a scorpion squirming in a deep puddle. The monk reached toward the scorpion to remove it from the water, but the creature stung him. Again the monk reached for the scorpion and again the creature stung him.
“Teacher, why do you keep trying to help the scorpion when it stings you?” the student asked.
“The scorpion stings because it is in his nature,” said the monk, “but it’s in my nature to love and honour all living things.”
Life, at times, can be painful like the sting of a scorpion; it provokes us to feel envy, rage, vengeance – emotions that have no upside. Yet, like the monk, we can’t give in to these. We must strive to be true to our nature to the goodness that inherently lies in each of us.
