Year 8 Highlights

Tuesday 17 March 2009

In their Independent Learning Class, the Year 8s have been working and managing their own work with the help of their teachers.

Today Gina Peele, Dean of Year 8, writes for our Blog:

During year level and form time the Year 8 students have been working on their time management and organisational skills, creating good habits that will be built upon through to Year 12 and beyond. The girls have been good at using their bag hooks and racks and keeping their area tidy and organised.

Over the last six weeks, many of our Year 8s have been participating in tennis and softball which has required them to train on a Tuesday morning and play for the School on Thursday afternoon. The girls have been very enthusiastic and have represented the School beautifully. The tennis team consists of 48 girls in Years 7 and 8 and there are 30 students in the softball team.

The Independent Learning Class has been in their new classroom all term, working and managing their own work with the help of their teachers Mrs Waters and Mr McGinley. Recently the girls were given a project that involved the students working in pairs to put forward a proposal for an item of room decoration. The item had to be related to the School curriculum in some way. They were given a budget of $5 to spend on materials, but were encouraged to recycle materials where possible. Some of the projects included:

•           a scene (with curtains) of the Colosseum

•           a display of boxes featuring the Periodic Table

•           an Egyptian architectural feature with King Tut's mask

•           a rainforest waterfall (over the window)

•           a coffee newsprint forest scene

•           a mobile of atoms

•           an ‘Enchanted Island' (text of Shakespeare's stories) scene.

The Year 8 students have been very busy with their involvement in musical groups and choirs and have also been auditioning for the Years 7 and 8 production, Alice in Wonderland. They have been very excited about their parts and their costumes.
