Year 7s Make Syllogisms

Thursday 12 February 2009

Year 7 Mathematics student have been writing syllogisms. Our Enrichment students have just started a unit on Logic.

Year 7 Mathematics Enrichment students have just started a unit on Logic. In class yesterday they were looking at syllogisms such as:
1.    All men are mortal.
2.    Socrates is a man.
3.    Socrates is mortal.

Provided the subject of the first statement matches with the predicate of the second sentence (men/man), a correct third statement can be made using the subject of the second sentence (Socrates in this instance) and the predicate of the first (mortal).

The girls then wrote syllogisms of their own. Kate Clark came up with:
1.    St Catherine's is a great school.
2.    Kate goes to St Catherine's.
3.    Kate goes to a great school.

In Unit 1 Legal Studies yesterday, the 'Legal Lions' competed against the 'Guilty Gorillas' in a quiz covering the differences between criminal and civil law, as well as other concepts covered in the course so far. The 'Guilty Gorillas won by one point, but were neck to neck with their opponents throughout the quiz.
