Beyond Boundaries
Year 7
Three nights at the Jungai Centre, near Eildon (one overnight hike)
Theme: Developing independence and environmental awareness
October 2009
The Beyond Boundaries program commences in the Senior School with a four-day trip to the Jungai Centre, situated on the banks of the Rubicon River near Eildon. Whilst at Jungai, girls are accommodated in self contained cabins for two nights and also complete an overnight hike to a nearby bush camp site where they are introduced to cooking on trangia portable stoves, lightweight camping and bush hygiene practices.
A strong focus on environmental service sees the students involved in an environmental activity, be it planting native trees sourced from locally collected seed, designing and building bird baths or constructing habitats for native animals.
As well as learning the fundamentals of orienteering and bushwalking, this venue offers a unique opportunity for students to experience Koori culture first hand, with Jungai's resident Cultural Officer involving the girls in activities such as bush tucker, art and dance.
These elements are drawn together in a corroboree celebration which is held on the final evening.
The program is incorporated into the English curriculum through the introduction of a Journal. Students are encouraged to use their Journal to record their feelings, thoughts or even sketches throughout the program which they then refer to in creative writing exercises on their return to School.
