A number of our Year 7 students have recently achieved outstanding results outside of School across a wide range of activities including Athletics, Fencing, Chess, Skiing and dance.

Congratulations to the following students:

Alexandra Demetriou Set to Represent Victoria

Exciting news over the weekend, Year 7 student Alexandra Demetriou has been selected by Athletics Victoria to represent her state at the Athletics Australia All Schools Championships taking place in the first weekend of December.

Alexandra will race in the 800m, competing against some of the best junior middle distance runners from around the county.

Alexandra’s selection is an outstanding achievement not only for herself personally, but for the entire Athletics program at St Catherine’s.

Alexandra will be the third school-girl athlete, developed purely from our School Athletics Program to qualify to compete at a national level this year.

It has been many years since St Catherine’s has had representation at the Australian All Schools and her selection follows in the footsteps of some outstanding St Catherine’s Old Girls including Lauren Hewitt (’96), who still holds the Under 18 Australian All Schools meet record for the 100m. Alexandra will continue to put in the hard work through St Catherine’s Running Group training over the next three weeks in preparation for the championships.

Mayuri Muralidharan

Mayuri fences for Blacklords Fencing Club Camberwell and for Tizona Club as well as representing St Catherine’s School in competitions. During Term 3 and 4, Mayuri has participated in many competitions, both nationally and internationally.

In Term 3 Mayuri attend the second half of the school’s competition held in Melbourne. She represented Blacklords FC Victoria and fenced in the U13, U15 and U17 in the lead up for the Club Championships. She competed in the National Fencing Championships in both U15 and U17 in Sydney and then went to Adelaide and U20 and Open events, winning eighth place in the U20 event. Mayuri travelled to Perth and fenced in the Open competition, just missing out on a medal. Last week, Mayuri won gold in the State Championships in the U13 category, taking her medal tally to 29 medals this year.

Mayuri has other competitions coming up in late November and she is looking forward to the Koala Cup which will be held in Sydney. Mayuri has a sports scholarship through the Australian Sport’s Commission.

Abby Page

Congratulations to Year 7 student, Abby Page who recently received a Local Sporting Champion Award from Federal Member for Higgins, the Honourable Kelly O’Dwyer.

Abby received the Award and Grant in recognition for her representation in the Melbourne Tigers Under 14 Team. Abby’s Team was invited by Basketball Australia to compete in the Nationals Basketball Championships held in New South Wales. The Tigers were one of only five Victorian teams invited to this Tournament. The Team placed fifth overall making them  the fifth best team in Australia for their age group.

Well done to Abby and her entire Tigers Team!

Lillian Lu

During Terms 3 and 4, Lillian competed in several Chess Tournaments, the most recent was representing St Catherine’s School at the Girls Interschool Chess Competition. Lillian played eight rounds of Chess scoring seven and a half out of eight, placing her first in the individual competition. Apart from this, Lillian has participated in many local club tournaments and is looking forward to competitions in Adelaide in December which is a National competition and the New Zealand Open Chess Championships during the January holidays.

Amelia Jones

Amelia will be travelling to Canada in early December where she will join an elite skiing racing squad. She will spend five months in the northern hemisphere training solidly in the International Racer Program. She will essentially be away from her family during this time, living in an apartment with other girls and the training schedule is arduous. A typical day of training consists of (injury prevention, movement preparation when arriving at the mountain, skiing for four to five hours solid, fitness, ski maintenance, dinner, training journal, bed). Coupled with general organisation, homework and maintaining the apartment.

Isabella Mangano

During Term 3, Isabella was selected to attend an international dance competition which was held in South Korea. Isabella auditioned for a place in the Australian IDO Team (International Dancing Organisation) and was selected to join. Isabella was a part of two groups that performed a routine comprising hip hop and jazz. The Team competed against the USA, France, China, South Korea and Brazil. The competition took place over three days, Isabella’s team placed first, and received a medal, in the junior level.
