The Thora Jex Memorial Award for Sporting Enthusiasm

Awarded to a Year 11 student who has shown sporting enthusiasm and has made a consistent contribution to sport in the School. A gift of the Old Girls’ Association in memory of a benefactor and teacher of Physical Education. Thora Jex was a long serving member of staff at St Catherine’s in the 1950s and 1960s. Many Old Girls remember her as their Sports Mistress. When Thora Jex died, St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association decided to remember her by presenting an annual award for sporting enthusiam.

The Margaret Woodlock Award for Outstanding Sporting Achievement

An occasional award presented to a Year 12 student who has made an outstanding contribution to the sporting life of the School in honour of Margaret Woodlock-McLean (’56 Woodlock), an Old Girl who competed in the 1956 Olympics in Shot Put whilst a student at St Catherine’s School.

Slawa Duldig Memorial Award for Art

Mrs Slawa Duldig was a long serving member of staff at St Catherine’s, having been Senior Art and Craft Mistress at the School for 17 years from 1946 to 1963. All her past students remember her with great affection and admiration. After she died in 1975, SCOGA established a Memorial Award in her honour.

The Danielle Lloyd Memorial Award for Music

The Louise Bristow Award for Debating and Public Speaking

This Award is presented to a Year 11 student who has made a significant contribution to Debating and Public Speaking. This Award is presented in memory of Louise Bristow, a great contributor to the School community. Louise was a Barrister and considered Debating and Public Speaking skills integral to her profession.

Sophie Borland Memorial Award for Public Speaking

This Award is provided by the St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association to a Year 12 student for excellence in, and contribution to, Public Speaking. Miss Sophie Borland was a long serving member of staff at St Catherine’s from 1935 to 1949. She taught English at the School and was Headmistress from 1943 to 1949. Many Old Girls remember her with great affection and respect. Following her death on 14 April 1999, the St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association established this Memorial Award in her name.

Presented in honour of past Head of Middle School, Jean Willey, from 1984 to 1991. More than just simply warm and caring, she had a lively mind and was well read; her girls learned much from her.

The Year 10 Doris Winter-Irving Award for School Excellence

A gift of the St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association, this Award is presented in honour of Mrs Doris Winter-Irving, a loyal and dedicated member of the teaching staff (Senior History). Mrs Winter-Irving joined the staff in 1956 and became Head of the Humanities Department and Chief of Staff. She retired in 1985 after nearly 30 years with the School.

The Year 11 Noel Warner Award for School Excellence

Mrs Noel Warner (Ferguson ’35) was an Old Girl of the School and served as School Captain in 1936. Mrs Warner was a member of the St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association for many years. Following her death in June 1973, the Committee established a lasting memorial to Noel by presenting an annual award to a Year 11 St Catherine’s student, who, like Noel, has given outstanding service to the School.

The Higgins Medal

The Higgins Medal is awarded to a student who demonstrates leadership amongst their peers, exhibits in their behaviour a commitment to the ethos of the School, demonstrates excellence in attitude and achievement, is a strong and consistent participant in school and community activity and exhibits an awareness of others and their needs. The Higgins Medal is officially awarded by Kelly O’Dwyer at an official ceremony in December.

The Australian Defence Force Future Innovators Award

Awarded to a Year 10 and Year 12 student who has demonstrated Science and Mathematics abilities while highlighting the value the Navy, Army and Air Force place on STEM skills and

The Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award

Awarded to a Year 10 and Year 12 student who have demonstrated leadership and teamwork; sponsored by the Australian Defence Force. The Battle of Long Tan was one of the defining moments in Australian military history and the naming of this Award is intended as a fitting tribute to the Long Tan veterans, reflecting the traits they demonstrated such as determination, mateship, teamwork, tenacity, compassion and leadership.

The Illawarra  Boarder Awards

This Award is named after our Boarding House – Illawarra. Built in 1888-89, it was presented as a gift to the National Trust in 1966. In 1997, St Catherine’s leased the property as the School’s Boarding House. Illawarra was considered a possible site for the School in 1922 by Ruth Langley and Flora Templeton but was rejected in favour of Kilbride (Sherren House) due to the greater grounds.

Awarded to a Junior boarder who has made a valuable contribution to boarding at St Catherine’s School.

The Langley Family Memorial Award for a Boarder

Awarded to a Year 12 Boarder who has made a valuable contribution to boarding at St Catherine’s School. This Award is in memory of all members of the Langley Family who served at St Catherine’s. Miss Ruth Langley was the second Principal of the School and served in that capacity from 1902, first in Castlemaine, then at Williams Road and ultimately at Heyington Place until her death in December 1933. Her sister, Miss Hilda Langley, was also School Principal, from 1933 to 1946, and two other sisters, Aphra and Nona, taught at the School in its early days. This Award is a gift of the St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association.

The Mary Davis Memorial Award to the Daughter of an Old Girl for Service to the School

Awarded for service to the School to a Year 11 student who is the daughter of an Old Girl. Miss Mary Davis was Headmistress of St Catherine’s for 21 years from 1950 to 1971. Many hundreds of Old Girls remember her with great love and respect. When Mary Davis died in August 1991, The St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association established a lasting Old Girls’ Memorial to her by presenting an annual Service Award to a Year 11 St Catherine’s student who is the daughter of an Old Girl.

The Margaret Mulder Award for International Citizenship

Awarded to a Year 12 international student who is courteous and considerate to peers and teachers, actively upholds the School policies, demonstrates School spirit through active involvement and is a role model to other students by promoting the value of cultural diversity. Margaret Mulder was a staff member of St Catherine’s School (1981–2003). She taught in the Junior School and then later was School Registrar. This Award is in recognition of her dedication towards, and work with, international students.

Xiaoling (Lyn) Wang

The Warburton Citizenship Award

Awarded to students in Years 7 to 11 who demonstrate courtesy, consideration and loyalty and reflect high values and enthusiasm for academic work and co-curricular involvement. The naming of this Award recognises our School’s history with its evacuation to Warburton during the Second World War. The Toorak site was taken over by the Australian Government to become a training base for the WAAAF. After a final assembly, St Catherine’s students and staff marched down to Heyington Station to travel the three hour train journey to Warburton where they remained for eight months.

The Sue Bell Humanities Prize

The Sue Bell Humanities Prize is awarded to a Year 12 student who has demonstrated outstanding academic results across two final year Humanities subjects. Subjects can include History: Revolutions, Global Politics or a University History extension program. The recipient displays academic rigour, intellectual curiosity and displays a love and engagement in Humanities. Sue Bell (Staley ’59) attended St Catherine’s as a day student, and for a short time as a boarder, from 1948 to 1959. She was Captain of Langley House and a School Prefect in 1960. After graduating in Arts at Melbourne University, she began her teaching career finally returning to St Catherine’s where she quickly became a much loved teacher of Politics and History, and Head of Humanities. This Award is donated in her memory as a dedicated educationist and supporter of the School.

Awarded to a Year 12 student who has been recognised for their leadership qualities and commitment across a range of activities: academic, co-curricular and in the wider
community; sponsored by Caltex Australia. One of Australia’s most respected secondary education recognition programs, this Award acknowledges the recipient’s all-round
contribution to the School and community.

The Jeanie Hood Prize

Awarded to a Year 12 student who has displayed the School Values – Curiosity, Integrity, Perseverance and Empathy. Named in honour of Jeanie Hood, the Founding Principal of St Catherine’s (then called Castlemaine Ladies College) who served in that role from 1886 to 1902. The award is donated by the St Catherine’s Old Girls’ Association.

The Melbourne Principals’ Award is awarded to Victorian Year 12 students in recognition of academic achievement and contribution to the school and/or wider community.

The Parents’ and Friends’ Association Citizenship Award

Awarded to a Year 12 student who has displayed community awareness, outstanding School spirit, and actively upholds the School Values. This Award is donated by the St Catherine’s Parents’ and Friends’ Association.
