A Visit from a Real Scientist...
In December 2008, Dr Stephen Hawkins, a Project Leader and Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology, visited the Year 5 and 6 students. He discussed his role as a scientist in the development and production of carbon nanotubes for a variety of potential applications in high strength textile materials, sensors and electronics. Dr Hawkins also presented the Years 5 and 6 students with their CREST Certificates. The students received these awards having completed a series of laboratory investigations implementing scientific methods to solve different problems.
Another CSIRO initiative, the Scientists in Schools program, offers five students a free one year membership to CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club. Student performance and passion for science formed the basis of a difficult selection process. We congratulate Jaquelin, Elizabeth, Alex, Daisy and Katerina who have all been awarded their Double Helix Science Club Memberships.
We look forward to welcoming Dr Hawkins back to St Catherine's this year to assist in our Science program.
