The importance of friendship
An edited excerpt of a speech given by 2012 Vice Captain Philippa Sutherland to all Senior School students at the final assembly attended by Year 12.
It is only when you are about to leave the St Catherine’s community that you realise just what it has given you. I will never forget the shock I had when I moved here in Year 5. It was unlike any community I had ever been a part of. There is a sense that every girl should be involved and given the opportunity to flourish and do what she loves. This is what makes St Catherine’s unique; every girl is an individual as well as an essential member of the whole. To be accepted and valued for who you are is one of the most precious gifts anyone can give you. And the School gifts us this every single day.
St Catherine’s is a school like no other. There are bigger competitors out there. But we know that when we work together we can achieve ten times what we can alone. You may think it’s repetitive when we win the population trophy at Athletics or other GSV events. But this says a lot about us.
At the end of the day, life is what you put in. I encourage every single one of you to continue to challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone and try something new. It will allow you to learn so much about yourself and is the only way you can know what you are truly capable of. If you are prepared to commit, what you can achieve knows no bounds.
I have experienced many highs and lows of not only Year 12 but school to this point. If there is one thing that I have learnt that I want to pass on to all of you, it is the importance of friendship. Whenever you can, take the opportunity to relish the support your friends give you and the fun you have here at St Cath’s. Because trust me, school will be over before you know it.
It has been such a privilege to lead with Katie this year. I am indebted to the St Catherine’s community in so many ways. Thank you and good luck to you all. I can’t wait to hear what you all get up to in your futures.
