Meet our Deputy Principal
Mr Paul Cross is the Deputy Principal at St Catherine's School, a role which he says involves "spending a great deal of time at the computer, on the phone and in meetings". The day is punctuated, he says, with the opportunity to visit classrooms and teach, and as often as possible, Paul also enjoys accompanying students on Beyond Boundaries expeditions.
In your time so far at the School, what is it you really like about St Catherine's?
The rich School culture which sees students operating as a close-knit community and the smaller size which means that students know each other are the highlights. Staff are very dedicated and supportive of student learning - I have never worked in a School where staff have been so willing to offer additional support to students. It is a delight to work in an environment where there is such a strong focus on academic achievement together with a strong emphasis on pastoral care and the individual.
Tell something of your academic and working background.
I have a Bachelor of Education, specialising in Environmental Science (Geography and Biology) and have taught Senior Geography, Biology and General Science, as well as ICT and History. Over my career I have had a number of positions of responsibility leading staff, students and managing co-curricular programs.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
My role is diverse as it covers so many aspects of the School's programs and systems, and teaching Science keeps my feet on the ground and enables me to leave my office! I also enjoy working with parents, students and staff. To be able to advance School policy and programs from a management level but also work as a classroom teacher is very special.
What are your interests outside of School?
Travel, food, cooking, music of all kinds and theatre. In 2000 I lived and worked in the UK and travelled around Europe, and I have travelled extensively throughout Asia and North America. I am looking forward to visiting South America in the future.
