A Midsummer Night’s Dream

St Catherine’s School in association with St Kevin’s College present one of William Shakespeare’s most enduring and magical comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The play deals with the universal idea of the joys and complications of love. The plot focuses on four intertwined stories: the trials and experiences of two sets of lovers and their escape to the forest, the magical world of the Fairy King and Queen and their enchanted followers, a group of rough craftsmen attempting to stage a production of Pyramus and Thisby for the wedding of the Duke of Athens, who has taken the Queen of the Amazons as his bride.

Our cast is comprised of a group of talented Years 11 and 12 actors from St Catherine’s School and St Kevin’s College. They have been hard at work since preparing for their auditions in Term 4 2016 and have come a long way in their understanding of the messages of the play, the development of their characters and relationships.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the play has been bringing Shakespeare’s language to life. It has been very rewarding to see the confidence of the cast grow and for them to now feel completely comfortable in bringing their own interpretations and suggestions to the rehearsal room. The development has come from holding discussions with one another about the motivation of characters, work-shopping different directions and characteristics and using the language to guide the action.

Our formidable VCE Theatre Studies class have collaborated to develop the overall vision for the production, as well as tackling the many production team roles including makeup, costume and set design, as well as working on the stagecraft areas of publicity, direction, stage management and acting. They have had meetings and workshops with a variety of theatre professionals and have drawn on the expertise of other staff and students at St Catherine’s across the planning and development stages of the production.
