Our Early Learning Centre
A place to discover and learn
The Early Learning Centre (also known as The Ilhan Family Centre) is located in Campbell House, an historic yet state-of-the-art learning environment for 3-5 year old children. The beautifully designed learning spaces inspire the children to wonder, question, discover, imagine and create. The indoor learning spaces are complemented by a spacious outdoor learning environment where an emphasis is placed on nature based experiences and environmental education. The Early Learning Centre is only a short walk to the outstanding Junior School and Senior School facilities, which the children have access to throughout the year.
The St Catherine's ELC comprises of four co-educational classes for children aged 3-5 years. The Waratah and Blue Gum Rooms are located on the ground floor and are home to our 3 year old children who attend either three or five days per week. The Wattle and Banksia Rooms are located on the first floor. The 4-5 year old children enjoy these spaces and all attend attend five days per week.
The Specialist Program
Our ELC offers specialist classes in music and the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP). The 3 year old children who attend the ELC three days per week will therefore attend some specialist classes, but not all, depending on their days of attendance. The 4-5 year old children participate in all specialist classes and also enjoy French in term 4. All children also make weekly visits to the Junior School library, with their class teachers.
Our ELC provides educational programs for children aged between the ages of 3 and 5 years. Under the Education and Care Services National Regulations 2011, our ELC is licensed to provide education and care to children from 3 years of age. Children commencing in the Three Year Old program at St Catherine's ELC must have turned 3 years of age by January 31 in their year of attendance. All children will attend an interview with the Head of ELC and Junior School prior to their commencement. Children attending the 3 year old programs can attend either 3 days per week or 5 days per week. Children attending the 4-5 year old programs all attend 5 days per week.

Our ELC Educators
A qualified and experienced early childhood teacher, together with an experienced early childhood assistant, work with the children at all times. This ensures that there are two educators with the children during program time. Supervision is always maintained at the highest level.
Exceeding National Quality Standards
St Catherine’s Early Learning Centre was one of the first to be awarded the highest possible rating of ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’ by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The ELC received an outstanding report in regards to all seven areas of the National Quality Standards, which apply to all early learning centres, kindergartens and childcare pre-schools.
Parents as Partners
Parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the ELC programs. Each classroom has a parent roster whereby parents can assist in the classroom on a selected morning. There will also be special events, excursions, incursions and projects that parents can be involved in. We also seek parent assistance when the children particpate in the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP).
Communication with Families
The ELC offers two formal occasions during the year for the educators to share the children's learning and development with parents. Parent - Teacher interviews are offered at the end of term 1 and at the beginning of term 3. Transition Statements (a written report) are completed in term 4 for those children progressing from the ELC four to five year old classes into prep. We encourage an open line of communication between educators and parents. Parents are welcome to meet with educators at an appropriate time as the need arises.
Throughout the child's year in the ELC, their learning and development is celebrated and documented in their own personal journal. The journal includes a meaningful collection of the child's work, written documentation, photographs and creative expressions. At the end of the year, the child keeps this journal as a memory of their learning journey at the ELC.
