Speak your mind!
The Debating and Public Speaking program is one of the most popular co-curricular offerings at St Catherine's, with over 100 girls involved each year.
We believe that the ability to speak confidently in a public forum is highly valued in the community and the workplace. Debating develops positive attitudes toward the intellectual exchange of ideas and confidence in preparing, presenting and defending logical argument.
Interschool Debating for students from Year 7 to Year 12 is organised through the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV).
The Senior DAV program, held at Scotch College during Terms 1 to 3, enables Years 9 to 12 girls the opportunity to debate both prepared and secret topics against teams from other schools in the Hawthorn Region.
The Junior DAV Program, held in Terms 3 and 4, caters for Years 7 & 8 students and training sessions and ‘friendly debates' are undertaken over four sessions.
A feature of this Program is the debriefing session, run by the DAV staff, following the adjudication and individual debate feedbacks. This allows the girls to consolidate their understanding of the all important aspects of successful debating - Matter, Method and Manner. Years 11 & 12 student mentors will help them prepare for their debates.
Public Speaking and House Competitions
In addition to these interschool programs, a host of opportunities exists for the students to further their oratory skills.
House Public Speaking and Debating begins in the Junior School with competitions continuing through the Senior School. A highlight of our program is the Year 12 mentoring program, which involves our oldest students mentoring Years 5 & 6 students, as they prepare and present speeches.
Prayer readings at Assembly and the Leadership Diploma Public Speaking program are also offered throughout the year.
Interested students can participate in a wide variety of community public speaking events including:
- Lions Youth of the Year Quest
- Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award
- Rotary Ainger Public Speaking Award
- Plain English Speaking Award
