From our Parents
An interview with current St Catherine's boarding parents, William and Mary Lyristakis (who live in Jerrambomberra, New South Wales). Their daughter, Helena, commenced in Year 9 in 2008.
Why did you choose St Catherine's School?
After Helena decided she wanted to experience a change and go to a boarding school, we booked flights to Melbourne and visited a few schools, and it was St Catherine's which made an impression on us straight away. Whilst walking around the grounds immediately we noticed the friendly girls who smiled at us and stopped to speak with us and the Registrar as we toured the campus. The boarding house had a wonderful homely feel to it. As soon as we entered the boarding house, Illawarra, we decided St Catherine's was the right school.
How did you find the whole process of choosing a School?
From the first time we made contact with the school everything was most professional. The prospectus was sent promptly and all correspondence dealt with swiftly. An offer was made to Helena to spend a day and night at the school and in the boarding house which helped her make the decision.
How did Helena find the ‘settling in' process at St Catherine's?
Helena settled in well, with help and nurture from the Head of Boarding Services, Sue Collister and other staff. Helena's tutor kept in touch with us and she also bonded with some of the older girls.
How do you feel involved in the life of the School as a Boarding parent?
We have found the School Community very welcoming. We have attended a few functions and the parents were very active in making sure we were introduced to others. Some parents have even come looking for us at functions to introduce themselves after meeting Helena! Several of the parents also help with transporting the boarders to sporting and social events. We have found there to be a tremendous school spirit amongst the students and parents.
