ELC Update – Learn@Home Program: many opportunities for learning and engagement

It has been wonderful to observe the learning occurring in the second week of our ELC Learn@Home Program. Many opportunities for learning and engagement have been presented to the children over the past week. The children’s planning for our Indigenous Garden continues. This has provided possibilities for the children to develop concept maps, research native plants and investigate bush tucker. Opportunities for exploring mathematical concepts such as counting, classifying, sequencing and fractions using natural materials and found objects around the home have also been offered. Research and investigations into nocturnal and diurnal animals, city buildings and native plants have continued. Science experiments have been conducted and acts of kindness towards others have been expressed.

Our regular Teams Meetings always spark excitement and enthusiasm for the children as they get to connect with their peers and educators. This is a time for sharing, listening, thinking and learning. The children often engage in group discussions, share a story, learn a new song, discuss their plans for the day, share their learning from home, or learn a new skill or concept through a teacher-led experience. These sessions have become increasingly important to the children as they are the only means through which they can connect with their friends during these challenging times.

Being outdoors and connecting with nature is always an important element of our Early Learning Program whether it be onsite or at home. The children are encouraged to be outdoors (as often as the current restrictions allow) to move their bodies, extend their physical skills, take risks and express their energy and enthusiasm. Being outdoors is also a wonderful learning opportunity as the children connect with nature, make observations of the seasonal challenges, collect natural materials, ask questions and wonder.

We encourage you to share your child’s learning at home. A photograph, a drawing or some simple words shared with your child’s class teacher allow the Learn@Home Program to become more interactive and collaborative. We really want to celebrate all of the wonderful learning happening at home.

We extend our sincere thanks to parents, family members and carers who are doing an incredible job to support the children with the Learn@Home Program and thus ensuring continuity of routine and learning for the children.
