Daffodil Day – a new tradition

As 2020 is a year of changes and new beginnings, we have decided to create a new tradition that can be carried out by all of the other Community Service Captains to come. Each year there will be a fundraiser for the Cancer Council, along with a cancer charity chosen by the Community Service Captains of that year. The fundraiser will be held on Daffodil Day each year with the funds being equally distributed between the two charities. Daffodil Day occurs annually across Australia on the 28 August, being one of the Cancer Council’s most iconic and loved days.

Daffodil Day aims to both raise lifesaving funds for cancer research, but also show support for the approximately 150,000 Australians diagnosed with cancer each year. While the Cancer Council recognises that this year will look a little different in fundraising, we would love St Catherine’s Community to be involved in contributing to the Cancer Council’s goal of raising more than $2 million this year. We have decided that this year our chosen cancer charity to support alongside the Cancer Council will be the Olivia Hope Foundation. As well as being moved by the touching story of Olivia, and the resilience of her parents, we believe it is time to shed more of a light on childhood cancer.

Around 650 Australian children are diagnosed with childhood cancer every year, and this year we hope to raise funds which will go towards child cancer research and therapies. It is time to make a difference in society, like the Olivia Hope Foundation continuously do. In order to raise funds for these charities we will be hosting a virtual yellow dress up day on August 28 with all donations to be made via this link which will then be distributed to the two charities. The colour yellow was chosen as that is the colour that is associated with the Olivia Hope foundation and Daffodil Day. We hope to see you all in your best yellow attire!
