St Catherine’s Excels in the Chess Victoria State Finals

On Monday 14 October, St Catherine’s participated in the Chess Victoria Open Secondary State Final held at Brighton Grammar School. At the completion of this event, St Catherine’s finished in 6th place out of 24 competing schools and was the highest scoring girls’ school in the tournament. This is an outstanding result considering that this year is the first year that St Catherine’s has participated in an Open Secondary State Final.

Paula Chen (Year 9), who was the highest scoring girl in the tournament, and Lillian Lu (Year 10), who was the second highest scoring girl, both received awards for their excellent individual performances.

On Tuesday 15 October, St Catherine’s hosted the Chess Victoria Primary and Secondary Girls State Finals. Nearly 200 students from over 20 schools competed in these two events. At the conclusion of the two tournaments, St Catherine’s was placed 4th out of 17 participating schools in the Primary Division and was ranked equal third out of 11 competing schools in the Secondary Division. These pleasing results are the best that St Catherine’s has ever achieved in the Chess Victoria Primary and Secondary Girls State Finals.

Lillian Lu (Year 10) and Paula Chen (Year 9), who both won six of their seven games, again won awards in the Secondary Division for their pleasing individual performances. Lillian and Paula were the second and third highest scoring players respectively in the Secondary Division. Kaixuan (Isabelle) Cao (Year 5) was also an outstanding player for St Catherine’s, winning five of her seven games and was the equal 9th best performed player out of 129 players in the Primary Division.

Paula Chen (Year 9) and Lillian Lu (Year 10) were the second and third highest scoring players respectively in the Secondary Division at the Chess Victoria Primary and Secondary Girls State Finals.
