“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” – Albert Einstein, German Physicist.

The Waratah Room children continue to express their wonder and curiosity about nature and the changing outdoor environment. The children have been invited to explore plants, life cycles, different flowers and blossoms through various learning experiences, informed by their interests inspired by spring.

Throughout the first week of Term 4, the children were invited to engage in a visually stunning Science experiment where they explored the transfer of water through a plant. The children took turns to place a white spring flower into jars filled with water and various shades of gel food colouring.

The children were asked open-ended questions such as:
“What do you think might happen? How might that happen?”

We then observed how these plants transport water up the stem to hydrate the leaves and petals. The brightly coloured water changed the bright white flowers into different shades of red, blue, yellow and green. The scientific steps, observation and investigation, were highlighted by returning to the children’s initial predictions. We were then able to discuss the similarities and differences between what we thought might happen and what we saw.
