“What is culture, after all, if not a series of acts of communication?” – Barnabe Laye.

Earlier in Term 3, the Waratah Room children were invited to engage in a special incursion entitled, ‘Edible and Indigenous Gardens’ by the Port Phillip EcoCentre and via the Stonnington Green Schools Program.

Through tactile and sensory investigations, the children were able to practise identifying plants and learn about their use in Indigenous Australian culture. In this way, the incursion meaningfully connected with current conversations pertaining to Bunjil the Eagle, a centre-wide community event, and the embedding of Indigenous perspectives in the program.

As the children engage in play and learning, they continue to be encouraged to consider the importance of becoming socially responsible and show respect for the environment.

We play on our land.
We learn from our ancestors.
We belong with our communities.
