The Language of Weaving

Over the first few days of Term 3, the children in the Wattle Room have been engaged in using the language of ‘weaving’. Ms Zoe Swindells constructed some weaving looms using sticks that the children had previously collected.

A variety of coloured wool has been presented to the children. Some children have asked for other colours, with Ms Swindells offering them the opportunity to choose other colours to support the children’s sense of agency, independence and making choices for their own learning.

Ms Swindells assisted the children initially by explaining how to weave – going under then over, under then over. Many children quickly grasped the concept and were able to independently weave. This learning experience also required the children to further develop their skills of persistence and commitment, with several children communicating their desire to finish their weaving.

We will continue to explore other forms of weaving throughout Term 3, making connections to other cultures through conducting research into weaving.
