St Catherine’s Hosts Chess Victoria Tournament

St Catherine’s students competed in the Chess Victoria Zonal Tournament.

On Monday 10 September, St Catherine’s School hosted a chess tournament for primary and secondary students. A total of 239 students representing 21 schools participated in this event, which included the participation of 45 St Catherine’s students.

Our School achieved pleasing results in both the Primary and Secondary Divisions of this tournament. In the Primary Division, the highest scoring St Catherine’s team finished 5th out of 19 teams. In the Secondary Division, the top scoring St Catherine’s team was the best performing girls’ school, finishing ahead of four rival girls’ schools and 8th overall out of 25 competing teams.

It is pleasing that St Catherine’s has qualified to compete in the Chess Victoria Primary and Secondary Girls State Finals, which will be held at St Catherine’s on Tuesday 16 October.

Lillian Lu (Year 9) won six of her seven games and was ranked third out of 133 players in her Division.

A special congratulations goes to several St Catherine’s students for their outstanding individual performances in this event. In the Primary Division, Audrey Doan (Year 5), Qing Chun (Joanna) Yang (Year 6) and Maeli Davenport (Year 6) each won five of their seven games and were amongst the best performing players in this Division. In the Secondary Division, Lillian Lu (Year 9) produced an outstanding performance winning six of her seven games and was ranked third out of the 133 players competing in this Division.
