From the Head of Year 12

As you support your daughters on the last leg of their high school journey, there are two messages I would like them to take home. The first is the importance of planning. In the recent issue of VCE Insights, I spoke about planning and pacing. Over the past few weeks, many students have come to see me with concerns about their time management. Planning is key, and not just focussing on the next week, but looking at the remainder of their school schedule and factoring in what to study and when. The second is to make sure they enjoy each other’s company. Year 12 can often cause students to focus on themselves and make comparisons with others. This is their journey and their story, so they should enjoy this time and the people they are sharing it with.

On 17 August, Community Service captains, Madeleine Leggo and Emily Kent, organised the Cut for Cancer event, where staff and students volunteered to cut the hair of 26 students and two teachers to raise money for Breast Cancer Australia. This monumental event helped to raise awareness about breast cancer. Madeleine and Emily’s incredible work behind the scenes made the event a great success and the girls managed to raise over $16,000.

After the success of the Cancer Council fundraiser in 2016, the Year 12 students were inspired to raise money for The Breast Cancer Network. As a community of females, this illness is extremely prevalent in our society, hence our decision to raise money for this important cause. From the money we have raised, females and males across the country who are touched with breast cancer will receive support, information and advice throughout their journey.

Cut for Cancer

Twenty-six girls bravely cut various lengths of their hair to raise awareness and funds for this important cause, some of which will be donated to make wigs for those affected by cancer. Initially, we set our goal at $10,000 and we quickly reached this target thanks to donations from community members. We have currently raised over $16,000 and we are excited to see how much we can raise for this important cause.

We would like to say thank you to the 25 students and Ms Braddy for cutting their hair, and Mr Racina – who bravely shaved his head. Without your inspiring sacrifice we could not have raised the awareness or money for the Breast Cancer Network.
