A Love of Learning in the Waratah Room

A Love of Learning in the Waratah Room

As an early childhood educator, the beliefs of Loris Malaguzzi, the founder of Reggio Emilia’s educational approach, are never far from my mind. One of his famous quotes when referring to educating our young learners is that we do ‘nothing without joy’.

I am new to St Catherine’s School, and in my first three weeks with the students in the Waratah Room, it all came flooding back – children genuinely have an innate love of learning. It is our role as teachers to foster this and make all learning opportunities rich with enjoyment and celebration.

Enjoyment and a sense of belonging for our children at school begins with the relationships they have formed, and will continue to form, throughout their school life. Every day, our children are learning in a social context. A combination of individual and group work provides a rich learning environment for the children.

So far this term we have spent time in small groups sharing interests such as bugs and snakes, and making stick people inspired by our favourite Julia Donaldson book, Stick Man. As a way of getting to know the children, they have had opportunities to discuss their families through mark making and sharing photos.

Children will grow and learn in an environment that is homely, friendly, nurturing, secure, safe, stimulating and aesthetically rich. Real learning is fun and enjoyable, and laughter is paramount throughout a child’s day. I am very excited about the next six months with the Waratah students and their families.
