Success at Sing-Off 2018

On Friday 27 July, 20 Year 11 and 12 students competed in the annual Sing-Off competition. Sing-Off is a student-run acapella competition, originally initiated by St Catherine’s students, competing to raise money for a charity of the hosting school’s choice. The event is comprised of performances by Trinity Grammar, St Kevin’s College, Xavier College, Genazzano FCJ College, Loreto Mandeville Hall and St Catherine’s School, who compete in both a solo and combined school category. The songs and choreography are selected, arranged, rehearsed and performed entirely by the students involved and are led by their music captains. The appreciative and enthusiastic crowd enjoyed an upbeat and varied program that included repertoire from High School Musical to ‘Hey Jude’ and a ’We Will Rock You’ medley.

The St Catherine’s students were in fine form, performing George Michael’s ‘Freedom’ and a “nostalgic medley” with students from Xavier College. The St Catherine’s students were thrilled to be awarded first place in the solo section by the guest adjudicator, Melbourne vocalist Miriam Crellin, who was impressed by the standard of performances and community spirit showcased on the night.

Student-led initiatives such as this one provide valuable and challenging opportunities for collaboration and leadership. The benefits of this sense of student ownership cannot be underestimated when it comes to the quality of their final performance and appreciation of their accomplishments.

All of the proceeds made from this year’s Sing Off were donated to Yooralla, an organisation that aims to improve job opportunities for people with a disability.

A note from the Music Choral and Instrumental Captains:

We would like to extend our thanks to all the staff and students who supported us over our preparations, rehearsals and final performance. We would like to especially thank Miss Jeanette Gunn for taking time out of her weekends and afternoon to supervise us throughout our rehearsals. Finally, thank you to all the Sing-Off girls who have worked extremely hard since March for this competition. We are so proud of what we have achieved; good luck to next year’s captains.

Tales From the Arabian Nights

It was a thrill seeing the Year 7 and 8 production, Tales from the Arabian Nights, coming to life in the rehearsal room this week. The students auditioned for a part in the play in Term 2 and rehearsals are now underway in preparation for the Term 4 performances. The plot revolves around the idea of teaching morals through storytelling, with plenty of twists and larger than life characters.

Tickets for the play will go on sale in Week 8, so watch this space.
