Year 7 in Term 3

After an engaging and industrious first semester, the Year 7s have returned to Term 3 refreshed from their well-deserved, three week holiday. Many had ventured overseas to warmer climates but they are ready to commence the new School term and once again, full of enthusiasm for what is ahead.

The wellbeing focus for Year 7 this semester will be on resilience. The level periods in Term 3 and 4 will emphasise building resilience in the girls, beginning with the Stonnington Council’s Resilience Survey. Resilience is a necessary skill for young people to develop in order to cope with life’s obstacles. Inevitably, our students will face challenges and difficulties as they mature into young women but the key is to “bounce forward” during these challenging times. Stonnington Council explains that “resilient young people are motivated and engaged in learning; feel confident; are connected to their community; and have the social and emotional skills to be successful in life” (Glen Eira Student Resilience Survey 2017 Report, p.2).

Another highlight for the year level this term is the House Debating Competition. The Year 7 English teachers have commented on the girls’ enthusiasm and high level of ability. Debating is a life-long skill that has many practical benefits. It encourages critical thinking, teaches research skills and allows the participant to organise and present information in a compelling and engaging fashion. It is with much anticipation that the students embark upon their first Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) season and I have no doubt that debating will be an enduring co-curricular activity for many in the cohort.
