Reflections from our Student Leaders

Student Leaders in Action

Two Year 12 students, Annabelle Motteram and Juliet Grant attended the Alliance of Girls Schools’ Student Leadership Conference in January this year. The girls have shared their reflections…

The Alliance of Girls’ Schools Student Leadership Conference, held at Bond University in January was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had. The university campus  was the meeting point for 165 girls who were not just in elected positions of leadership within their school, but rather a group of young women who were ready to challenge themselves and make the most of their last year of school.

Personally, I found the most inspiring parts of the Conference were not only the leadership talks or the special seminars but the split second moments when I could stop, and just take it all in. It was in these moments that I was able to reflect on the fact that I was surrounded by a range of young women from all over the globe, all potential leaders of the future. In these moments, I could meet, talk to and learn from each girl who was different from the next. I felt privileged knowing that I was surrounded by young women who were willing to share their stories, their successes and their failures with me and because of this, I was able to learn the most about myself and how to make the most of 2018.

The Alliance of Girls’ Schools’ Student Leadership Conference was a fantastic experience as it linked like-minded individuals, who are in positions to create small, yet significant change in their girls’ schools across the world.

Every speaker inspired us not only by their motivational words, but by the actions that they had taken and the challenges they had overcome. Each of the speakers inspired every girl, by encouraging them to have a dream and to stick to it. One presenter, Cam Greenwood, owner of his own social enterprise, started his surf business at the age of 18, which has now grown into a platform which helps children in need all around the world. Liz Volpe, owner of a leading marketing business in Melbourne, set herself a goal of raising 250 million dollars for charity at age 22 and has just reached 150 million.

For me, the most influential aspect of the Bond Conference was hearing the stories of strength and aspiration from the girls who sat next to us from all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the United States and even Zimbabwe. It was so inspiring to be with others who share the same determination to lead not only themselves, but their entire school this year to a state of fearlessness and empowerment which will brace them well for the challenges they will face in the future.
