Teaching and Learning at St Catherine's School
St Catherine's School offers an education that
is characterised by breadth, depth and diversity. We are a
vibrant, close-knit learning community where students, teachers
and parents share in the process of learning.
St Catherine's fosters an environment of academic
excellence through a broad and diverse curriculum which encourages
flexibility and innovation in approaches to learning. All
students are valued and encouraged to reach their full potential
and to become independent learners who respond to challenge
and change.
At St Catherine's School, teachers and students
work in a vital learning partnership, planning, problem solving,
communicating and inspiring others. Using the school's state
of the art network, all members of the School community connect
with each other via the exchange of ideas and information
to maximize learning inside and outside the classroom.
Students and teachers at St Catherine's share
the learning journey together. They research, debate and question
topics under investigation. In this educational environment,
the learner and her individual needs are central to the construction
of tasks and assessment.
In the classroom, teachers, mindful of the different
ways in which students learn, search for innovative ways to
create engaging and appropriately complex classroom activities.
For example students in Year 7 Science classes are participants
in a NASA space project requiring communication and involvement
with NASA astronauts.
At St Catherine's students are taught to develop
negotiation, problem solving, and communication and presentation
skills. They are encouraged to participate and to stretch
themselves. We encourage each student to participate in the
activities on offer. These activities span a broad spectrum
- from cultural, sporting and leadership training to social
service, spiritual development, ethics, outdoor education
and exchange participation. All are integral to the personal
development of the well-rounded individual.
St Catherine's is concerned with developing
the whole girl so that she is confident with herself and with
her place within her 'family' or community. Our goal is in
keeping with our founders' original aim to prepare students
for life; our staff additionally prepare students to be lifelong,
independent learners.
At St Catherine's we are committed to ensuring
that each student is able to enquire deeply, is responsive
to challenge and change and is ready to lead. Through the
development of these skills we aim to shape adults for the
future who can add value to their community and chosen field
of endeavour.
