Student Leadership & Government
Students are encouraged to participate in the organisation of the School, to develop a sense of community responsibility and leadership. The School's Student Leadership system provides girls from Year 6 with leadership and peer support training, and there are many opportunities to experience positions of responsibility.
YEAR 12 LEADERS
The Senior Office Bearers are elected for the following year at the end of Term 3.
All students in Years 11 submit nominations for the School Captain and Vice Captain positions. Other positions are nominated by their appropriate group, House or Committee members, according to their constitutions.
In general, a student must secure the support of 15% of these votes to be nominated. A student may hold only one position, with the exception of sporting team positions, of which two may be held. As soon as all nomination lists have been finalized, anyone nominated for more than one position must give the Director Students and Administration a list of positions for which she has been nominated, in order of preference.
Elections are then carried out, in which all members of the relevant classes, teams, Houses or committees, and appropriate staff vote. The Director Students and Administration is the Chief Electoral Officer.
The General Committee
The General Committee is the senior student advisory body. It consists of the School Captain (President) and Vice-Captain (Secretary); Captains of Boarding House, Art, Debating, Duke of Edinburgh, Environment, International, Magazine, Community Service, the four Houses, Music and sport.
The Principal and nominated senior members of staff are ex-officio members. The General Committee meets regularly each Term. The Committee considers the reports of its sub-committees and advises the Principal on the management of the School from the students perspective.
Student Representative Council (Years 7 -11)
In 2005, a Student Representative Council consisting of Year Level Representatives from Year 7 to 11 was introduced.
The Council meets regularly and presents recommendations to the General Committee. Students in these year levels will also have the opportunity to join committee and to undertake the role of Form Captain.
In Years 7 to 10 these positions change each semester to allow more girls the opportunity to experience leadership roles. The Year 11 representatives lead the SRC and hold office for the whole year.
Leadership Diploma: Years 9 and 10
The Leadership Diploma incorporates all components of the Years 9 and 10 curriculum, recognising students' involvement in and achievement from their academic and co-curricular program. Additionally, students are expected to develop positive relationships, to be involved in mentoring programs, community service and environment programs, performance and public speaking, Outdoor Education and positive role modelling through faultless wearing of School uniform and upholding of School expectations at all times.
Students who complete the Diploma are eligible for leadership selection in Year 11 and 12, Peer Support Training in Year 11 and then General Committee in Year 12.
Barbreck Council The Junior School Council meets each fortnight and consists of two representatives from each class from Years 3 to 6.
The meetings are chaired by the Junior School Co-Captains.
