Three students from the Class of 2005, working in three very different mediums, have had their work selected for this year’s VCE Top Arts exhibition.
Opening night of the VCE Top Arts 2005 at the NGV Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square saw 2005 Studio Arts students Eliza Cameron, Camilla Hartl and Jaimee Salmon unveil their masterpieces to the awaiting public. The girls’ work was chosen from more than 4000 applications submitted by Victorian Art and Studio Arts students. Each year approximately 150 students are short-listed for the exhibition and just 65 works are hung in the Gallery. In addition to our three finalists, Rhia Taranto (Studio Arts), Alexandra Wilson (Studio Art) and Amy Hurren (Art) were short-listed. Eliza Cameron, whose Studio Art piece will be exhibited, was also short-listed for her work in Art.
Eliza’s Studio Art piece, a photo-realistic oil on canvas portrait of her sister, is a brooding and expressive artwork that makes dramatic use of light and shade to draw you in to the subject’s mesmerising stare.
Camilla Hartl’s elegant hand-bound artist’s book of eight dry point etchings provides a unique perspective on the intricate and ancient architectural features of Italy. The sketches, enclosed within two tapestry fabric covers, were developed from her observations during the School’s Study Tour of Italy earlier in the year.
Jaimee Salmon will have two digital images from her series of 12 Japanese Manga style illustrations on display during the Exhibition. Her works combine traditional hand drawn illustration with digital imagery and effects. The accompanying narrative, also written by Jaimee, explores themes of love, good, evil, violence and heroism.
All of the girls look set to continue their exploration of Art at tertiary level, with Eliza studying Fine Arts at Monash University, Jaimee undertaking Creative Arts at the University of Melbourne and Camilla studying Arts at Monash University.
The girls continue a proud tradition for St Catherine’s School in the Top Arts exhibition. In 2003, Maddie Simpson (2002) won the People’s Choice Award for most popular artwork and last year Amelia Lackmann (2004) was Runner Up in this same competition.
